Matthew 7:15 (New American Standard Bible)
“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
Acts 20:29-30 (English Standard Version)
“I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.”
“It is time, O God, for Thee to work, for the enemy has entered into Thy pastures and the sheep are torn and scattered. And false shepherds abound who deny the danger and laugh at the perils that surround Thy flock. The sheep are deceived by these hirelings and follow them with touching loyalty while the wolf closes in to kill and destroy. I beseech Thee, give me sharp eyes to detect the presence of the enemy; give me understanding to see and courage to report what I see faithfully. Make my voice so like Thine own that even the sick sheep will recognize it and follow Thee.”—A.W. Tozer
Whatever these wolves desire from this power control or financial gain over people are opposing God. They will eventually have to appear before the judgment seat of God unless they repent from their wicked ways.
Hebrews 5:14 (English Standard Version)
“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
Somebody claiming the title “Christian” or “Spiritual leader” and has a book, church, media attention, ministry, etc. does not mean they are biblical.
2 Timothy 3:5 (New King James Version)
“(They)…having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
Colossians 2:8 (New Living Translation)
“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
Always go back to the Word of God as your standard and compass for examining a “spiritual” leader or organization. If they deny the essentials of the Christian faith, (Jesus, Trinity,Bible as true and God inspired, Salvation, Creation account, etc.) then you should not bother with these persons.
I know I sound like I am painting myself as a false teacher hunter. Yet, when you have wolves dressing up in sheep outfits coming into the sheep pen, the shepherds need to make use of the staff and protect the flock! It can be irritating to see believers and non-believers get ripped off by these wolves. By using God’s Word, the sheep costumes can be pulled off these wolves.
John 14:26 (New American Standard Bible)
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”
It is a blessing of the Lord providing us help with discernment. We do not have to be helpless when it comes to questionable religious leaders and ministries. The Holy Spirit is with us and desires to empower knowledge and discernment to us for these situations. Always be on guard! Stay continually in God’s Word. His Word is your weapon for any battle, even when wolves are in the sheep fields.
